The Methane Emergency Brake

Climate change today is like a runaway train hurtling faster and faster toward a point of no return. But the train is equipped with a very powerful emergency brake: cutting rising methane emissions. It’s time to pull it.

Now’s the Time

With global temperatures exceeding 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels and climate feedback loops looming, we’re not just in a climate crisis anymore; we’re in a full-blown climate emergency. Cutting methane emissions deeply now is the strongest emergency response we have. The faster we cut, the greater the potential to avert tipping points, mitigate temperature rise, and stabilize the climate..

A Code Red Emergency

Rising methane pollution is a Code Red emergency. But by cutting it, we can defuse the emergency and reverse methane’s climate impacts relatively quickly. New satellite data pinpoint methane hotspots in real time, literally showing us the priority methane emitters we need to address. They provide a compelling way to visualize the emergency, and the tools we need to respond to it.

Rapid Emergency Response

While we can’t stop it entirely, slamming the brakes on climate change by cutting methane emissions deeply now would alleviate a major factor driving global temperatures up. That could shave up to half a degree Celsius (0.9 degrees Fahrenheit) off projected average temperature rise in the coming decades -- a huge climate difference we will soon feel.

Get Proactive

There are many practical ways to cut methane emissions from fossil fuels, agriculture, organic wastes, and aquatic sources starting now. Learn more about concrete steps we can take to cut methane deeply today, and how you can help move them forward.
