What if we could slow global warming within years, not decades?
In a new op-ed, climate scientist V. Ram Ramanathan, Durwood Zaelke, and Marcelo Suárez-Orozco make the case for rapidly cutting short-lived climate pollutants — especially methane — alongside deep CO₂ cuts.
They estimate that fast action on these pollutants could reduce the rate of warming by around 30% by the 2040s. Methane is extremely powerful but relatively short-lived, meaning steep cuts can slow warming quickly and buy precious time as the world phases out fossil fuels.
The tools already exist. What’s missing is action at the speed the climate emergency demands.
